What contributes to surface rust?
Surface rust can form even on 304 Stainless Steel (outdoor rated) material if a lot of moisture or water is left on the range hood surface.
Is surface rust removable or do I need a new range hood?
The good news is that surface rust is 100% removable! You do not need a new range hoods, just a few gentle cleaning supplies.
How to remove surface rust from a range hood
To get rid of oxidized stains or even “surface rust,” you can use a paste made from baking soda and water, or try a cleaner that has oxalic acid, like Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser.
- If you're using baking soda and water, take a soft clean cloth to gently apply the baking soda paste along the direction of the grain (left to right). It might require a bit of effort, but this will help remove the dirt.
- Once the surface is clean, rinse it using a fresh damp soft cloth.
- After that, you can use a stainless steel cleaner like Cerama Bryte Stainless Steel Cleaner, which you can find at most hardware store.
- If you choose to use Bar Keepers Friend, make sure to use only the liquid cleanser (without grit) and gently rub in the direction of the metal grain lines (left to right) with a damp soft sponge.
