In some cases, a drop down box might be required to use a ceiling hood effectively.
How do I build a drop down box?
This type of enclosure is typically built by a professional installer or contractor. It consists of building a custom wood or metal frame that the range hood can be securely installed inside. The framed box is typically covered by drywall. It is similar to a short bulkhead, but only built around the ceiling range hood.
Why would I need to build a drop down box?
There are several scenarios why a drop down box might be required for your ceiling hood installation.
Scenario 1 - The joists are perpendicular to the stove
If the ceiling joists or trusses are perpendicular to the stove (run in the opposite direction) a drop down box is necessary to enclose the unit.
Scenario 2 - The ceiling height is 9 feet or higher
For taller ceilings, and if you wish to install the ceiling hood within the recommended 48" to 60" distance from the cooking surface, a drop down box is required. This allows for the unit to be installed closer to the cooking area and provide better performance overall.
What if I want to install the hood higher anyway? With a 9 foot or 10 foot tall ceiling?
This is an option; however, it is not recommended. Installing the unit at a higher than recommended distance means that the advertised performance of the unit might not be achieved. Ultimately, it is the home owners decision how high to install the range hood. Higher installations should be reserved only for basic cooking needs.
INSTALLATION NOTE: All drop down box installs require the Top Vent option for ducting the range hood, in order to allow for the duct to go upward first before turning inside the joists to eventually exhaust out of a side wall.
