Scenario 1:
We are interested in your ceiling mounted range hoods and I am wondering which model would work for our situation? Our ceiling’s are 9 feet high and I want to mount as high as possible above the cooktop. Our ceiling joists run the opposite direction to the cooktop.
Recommendation:
If the joists are in the opposite direction, a dropdown box would be required. The highest installation distance for best performance is 60" from the cooking surface. Higher is possible, but will reduce performance and suction.
Replacing a unit?
If you are replacing a existing range hood, a ceiling hood can be used against a wall or over an island cooktop.
Don't have any range hood yet?
Ceiling hoods are great options for an unobstructed view and are made to work at higher installation heights than normal hoods. They can fit many situations perfectly and are a great alternative to downdraft hoods.
Which duct size is required?
The minimum duct size required for units with up to 600 CFM would be a 6" round duct. For higher CFM units up to 1000 CFM, an 8" round duct is required.
How much CFM do ceiling hoods have?
Standard ceiling hoods like the Sunset model have 600 CFM. The Horizon model has 900 CFM and requires larger 8" ducting.
Are the hoods ducted or can be recirculated?
By default our ceiling hoods duct to the outside. If you require a duct-less or recirculated unit, we have a ductless kit available here.
How high can the ceiling hood be installed?
Ceiling hoods are recommended to be installed between 48" and 60" from the cooking surface. This distance provides the best overall performance. If you have a taller ceiling of 9' tall, the range hood can still be installed, but it is best for basic/moderate cooking at this height. For improved performance, there is an option for the installer to build a framed drop-down box and cover it with drywall. This allows the installation of the hood at a lower distance and is optional. For most general cooking needs, the unit does not require a drop-box.
Which way should the ceiling joists/rafters run?
For a flush installation, ideally, the joists should run in the same direction as the stove. If the joists are perpendicular or not in the same direction, a drop-down box would be required to install the unit. This box must be minimum 9-1/2" to 10" tall in order to accommodate the entire unit.
Do you provide the drop box or do you manufacture this box?
At this time, we do not manufacture any drop boxes for the ceiling units. This is something that a contractor or installer would need to assist with making.
What is the difference between Side Vent and Top Vent exhaust direction / duct orientation?
For some models like the Sunset, the duct orientation can be Side Vent or Top Vent. Typically, the side vent option is for venting directly to the side (between joists) and to an outside wall. This options is only possible if the joists are in the correct direction and the unit can be installed fully between the joists. The Top Vent option is available on the Sunset and Horizon models and means that the duct would go directly upward. This is best for venting through the roof, or venting upward before turning inside a joist cavity to exhaust to the outside.
