In order to find the best range hood for your situation, consider following the steps and guidelines below. This article outlines the most important considerations to make when ordering a new range hood for your kitchen ventilation.
1 - Determine the Installation Type
First, determine which installation type you will require. The installation options are listed below:
- 1.1 - Insert
- 1.2 - Ceiling Mount
- 1.3 - Wall Mount
- 1.4 - Under-Cabinet
- 1.5 - Island Mount
- 1.6 - BBQ or Outdoor
2 - Confirm the Cooking Surface Details
Find out and verify which cooking surface you will be using with your range hood. The available options are listed below:
- 2.1 - Electric
- 2.2 - Induction
- 2.3 - Gas
- 2.4 - BBQ
SPECIAL NOTE: If using gas, add up the BTU rating for all the burners in order to determine the minimum CFM recommendation. For every 10,000 BTU, it is recommended to have minimum 100 CFM.
Example: A 4-burner gas range with 15,000 BTU per burner has a total rating of 60,000 BTU. The recommendation in this example would be to use a range hood that has 600 CFM or more.
3 - Choose your ducting option
Decide on how the ducting will be installed and if any changes are necessary. Consider each of the options below:
- 3.1 - Use your existing ducting if it is the correct size to match the range hood duct size
- 3.2 - Install brand new ducting if changes are required or if previous ducting is insufficient
- 3.3 - Use a recirculation kit to have a ductless system that recirculates the air in the kitchen
4 - Decide on the duct size
Based on the range hood you select, it is equally important to choose the correct duct size. Ensure that you never reduce the duct beyond the manufacturer's recommendations. There are a few options for duct sizes based on CFM ratings:
- 4.1 - 6" Ducting (for up to 600 CFM)
- 4.2 - 8" Ducting (for up to 1000 CFM)
- 4.3 - 10" Ducting (for up to 1500 CFM)
5 - The length of the duct and number of turns
Ensure that the length of your ducting is not beyond 50 feet (or 35 feet if 1 or 2 elbows are used). For best performance, it is best to use maximum 1 duct elbow.
6 - Range hood installation height
Be sure to follow the recommended installation height based on the range hood you choose. Most standard range hoods with up to 750 CFM should be installed between 26" and 30" from the cooking surface. More powerful range hoods with 1000 CFM to 2000 CFM should be installed at 30" above the cooking surface and as high as 36" above the cooking surface.
7 - Ceiling Height
If you are installing a Wall Mount or Island Mount unit, ensure that your ceiling height is between standard heights of 8' to 9' tall. If you have a higher ceiling, an extension will need to be purchased. If you have a lower ceiling, a custom cut will be required.
8 - Outside vent cap, wall caps and roof caps
This detail is often forgotten, but the outside vent cap (wall cap or roof cap) is just as important as the duct size. Ensure that whichever vent cap you use is the same size as your ducting. Avoid reductions as this will cause more noise and reduced CFM.
